Double Major with Public Health

Curriculum Exceptions

There are a number of curriculum requirements that must be noted when pursuing a double major with one of our bachelor’s degrees and an outside UC Irvine major.

Catalogue Rights policy dictates that continuing students and transfer students can choose the version of the Public Health Sciences or Public Health Policy major requirements that they would prefer in accordance with the timeframes they are enrolled at UCI or a community college.

Public Health Sciences & Public Health Policy

Only the following five courses can double count for both majors:

  • PubHlth 1
  • PubHlth 2
  • PubHlth 101
  • PubHlth 7A (or stats equivalent)
  • PubHlth 195W

Students must complete dissimilar Social & Behavioral Courses for each major, totaling a total of six courses. If a student completes these courses at another institution on a semester system, it could be a total of four courses.

Public Health Policy & Biological Sciences

Students will be allowed to apply up to three courses for both majors:

  • Statistics course
  • Two Upper Division Courses

Public Health major with any major in the School of Social Ecology

  • PubHlth 195W must be taken through Public Health. This course includes a 10-hour a week internship, plus the Public Health writing section.
  • Please note that the internship site selected must be in both the Social Ecology Field Study Catalog as well as the Public Health Practicum Catalog.
  • PubHlth 195W will count as one of the two courses you can overlap between the two majors.
  • Practicum is open only to upper-division Public Health students who are in good academic standing, have completed all prerequisite course work, and have submitted a graduation application. Practicum must be taken for a letter grade. PUBHLTH 195W must be completed with a minimum letter grade of C.
