Heat Stress Has Damaging Impact on Older Adult’s Vital Organs

"Inflammation in the brain and spine contributes to cognitive decline, compromises the ability to form new neurons, and exacerbates age-related diseases. By investigating the effects of heat stress on the gut-liver-brain crosstalk, we can better protect our increasingly vulnerable aging population." (Saurabh Chatterjee)

Molecular Evidence Of Heat Stress Damage To Gut, Liver, And Brain In Elderly Mice

"Our findings have the potential to be used for the development of prognostic and therapeutic markers for precise interventions. In a dynamically changing global landscape, the imminent threat of climate change is evident in rising temperatures, raising concerns about intermittent heat waves. Our heating planet is undoubtedly leading to acute and chronic heat stress that harms the health of our aging population." (Saurabh Chatterjee)

How Does Bird Flu Spread to Humans?

"Given that the virus can be present in chicken and cows, there’s a potential—albeit unlikely potential—for exposure to bird flu through raw milk or eggs. It’s not responsible to say absolutely that bird flu cannot be transmitted through food. All foods from bird sources should be cooked properly." (Dele Ogunseitan)

What are PFAS? ‘Forever chemicals’ are common and dangerous.

"For instance, PFAS are commonly used in non-stick cookware, greaseproof food packaging, outdoor clothing, waterproof cosmetics, and stain-resistant carpets and furniture. While most such products don't advertise that they were made using PFAS, if a product says it's waterproof, stain proof, or non-sticking, and isn't advertised as being PFAS-free, then it likely contains PFAS." Are Female Doctors Better? Here’s What to Know

"While we don’t know exactly why this disparity exists, it likely has a lot to do with a lack of understanding of female pain from the start of medical training, and the life experience that women doctors bring to the table. Every female physician has been a female patient at some point in their lives. " (Manijeh Berenji)

Closing the US/Mexico border during COVID-19 increased HIV transmission, study finds

"If two or three people have viruses that are very similar to each other, we can assume that the transmission event happened more recently, because there is not enough evolution between these different viruses from these different people. This shows that efforts to build a higher wall or policies to stop immigration will not mitigate HIV spread. The Frontera [border] is one integrated community that is not defined by place of residence. Efforts to end the HIV epidemic in the U.S. also need to be integrated by extending to Tijuana. These findings confirm that HIV has no passport." (Tetyana Vasylyeva)

OC faces $1.8B challenge posed by new EPA rules on ‘forever’ chemicals in tap water

"One of the arguments we made when I applied for Orange County to be one of the test sites is that we have one of the largest affected water systems in the country. Other, smaller sites are affected by a single source, and confined to a smaller group of people. That’s not the case here. There isn’t any one specific cause for our (PFAS) problem here, and it’s not affecting any specific group of people." (Scott Bartell)

Addressing Health Disaparities

"And I think it really comes down to a lot of times our context, that simply making or recommendations for swaps or additions to foods might not always be the best place to go. I think back often to something called the transtheoretical model where the Stages of Change, oftentimes, we're not really looking to immediately kind of change our diets. And that's where most people are kind of starting. " (Matthew Landry)

CDC Launches Initiative to Prevent Extreme Heat Exposure

"In the Los Angeles context, residents from underserved communities are experiencing heat-related health disparities such as heat exhaustion and cardiovascular-related impacts as a result of climate change and inequitable access to heat protective environments like green space, cooling centers, shade infrastructure, etc." (Jason Douglas)
