Epidemiology & Biostatistics

Welcome

The mission of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics is to improve population health through research, education, community engagement, and translating discoveries into practice.

Epidemiology is a quantitative, data-driven discipline that uses rigorous methods to collect, analyze, and interpret health-related data in human populations. Epidemiologists use this information to examine the distribution and determinants of disease and to apply this information to develop disease prevention strategies to improve population health.

Epidemiology is an exciting field that not only develops and applies rigorous epidemiology methods, but also draws on other scientific disciplines, including biostatistics, informatics, genomics, biology, economics, social and behavioral sciences.

“We are a dynamic and growing department that prides itself on interdisciplinary collaboration, including faculty across the College of Health Sciences, across the UCI campus, and with partners outside the university to describe, understand, and reduce the global burden of disease.”

Degrees and Programs Offered

The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics offers two courses of study and academic research leading to a MS degree or a PhD degree in epidemiology. As a graduate student in the Department, you will learn the fundamental principles and methods used to study the distribution and determinants of disease in human populations. Besides course work, you will work directly with the faculty to apply your epidemiologic knowledge and hone your research skills.

The Department does not offer an undergraduate degree, but undergraduates who would like some experience in epidemiology may arrange to take directed-studies courses with epidemiology faculty (EPIDEM 199). These courses are available to all upper-division undergraduates irrespective of their major. Several of our graduate-level courses are open to selected, upper-division undergraduate students.
