Admissions
We’re excited that you have chosen to apply to the UCI PhD in Epidemiology program. Applicants are admitted for the fall quarter following the deadline. We do not offer entrance in any other quarters. We encourage you to start the application process early to ensure that your file is complete by the deadline. Applications are reviewed after the posted application deadline.
The deadline for receipt of all application materials for the PhD program is December 1, 2024.
Please note: Scores for the general Graduate Record Examination test (GRE): temporarily waived for enrollment.
Who Can Apply
Master’s level degrees in epidemiology, public health, other health-related disciplines, or clinical training are the preferred preparation for admission to the PhD in Epidemiology. However, applicants with background in other disciplines are encouraged to apply.
Admission Requirement
General requirements for admission to graduate study are that the applicant hold the degree of Bachelor of Arts, Letters, Philosophy, or Science (or an acceptable equivalent) from an accredited academic institution with degree standards equivalent to those of the University of California. A minimum undergraduate grade point average of at least B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) is required.
In addition to meeting the general admission requirements set by the Graduate Division, applicants must be admitted by an admissions committee composed of faculty members of the graduate program. Candidates will be selected on the basis of a balanced evaluation of the following criteria, with no one factor having more influence:
- Prior scholastic performance, including a consideration of grades, course load, nature of courses taken, and college attended;
- Recommendations by professors and others;
- An interview by members of the Admissions Committee and other faculty members, when feasible; and
- Prior epidemiologic/public health/clinical experience or related applicable experience;
- Evidence of some basic quantitative ability: College or Graduate Courses, test scores (such as GRE)
- Scores for the general Graduate Record Examination test (GRE): temporarily waived for enrollment.
While the epidemiology department has no additional requirements, admission into our program is competitive. To apply to the PhD in Epidemiology program, you need to submit one application via the UCI Graduate Division as well as through the SOPHAS site.
Funding Your Degree
The Department makes every effort to cover academic fees and supply a modest stipend by several means, including teaching and research assistantships. Students are strongly encouraged to apply for fellowships. The Graduate Division at UC Irvine provides more information about funding.
The Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics works with our doctoral students to help them financially via a combination of funding sources including living expense stipends, fellowships, grants, teaching assistantships and research assistantships. After the faculty make a decision to admit, the Department will include information in your admission letter detailing any financial support that is offered.
