UCI Public Health Among 20 Programs Worldwide to be Recognized for Raising Awareness of the Field

Gabrielle Gussin, Ph.D. Candidate and Oladele Ogunseitan, PhD

UCI Public Health’s Department of Population Health and Disease Prevention (PHDP) is honored to be recognized as a 2021 “This is Public Health” TIPH Global Award Winner. The program’s PHDP department is among 20 winners – worldwide – who were recognized for their achievements to raise awareness about the field of public health. This recognition comes on the heels of an April announcement of PhD candidate Gabriela Gussin, on being selected as a Global Ambassador for TIPH.

In addition to the recognition, the Department of PHDP will receive funding to work on a project entitled “Antibiotics Stewardship is Public Health,” spearheaded by Oladele Ogunseitan, PhD, UC Presidential Chair and Professor of Population Health and Disease Prevention.

Dr. Ogunseitan and Ms. Gussin’s work will look at challenges that society faces when it comes to improving stewardship of antibiotics. The project’s goals are to further investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding antibiotics stewardship. They will build their study through implementation science framework for effective cross-sector stakeholder engagement in national action plans and sustainable communities of practice on antibiotic stewardship.

TIPH is sponsored by the Global Network for Academic Public Health, which convenes leaders from around the world to share, learn, collaborate, and act to advance academic public health. The campaign was originally launched by the Association of Schools and Programs for Public Health and has been elevated to a global network.
