Dr. Annie Ro awarded over $1.7M to study structural racism and birth outcomes

Annie Ro

Congratulations to Annie Ro, PhD, associate professor of health, society, & behavior with the UCI Program in Public Health, for being awarded over $1.7 million in R01 grant funding from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. Funds will support her ongoing project entitled, “Structural Racism and Adverse Birth Outcomes in the U.S. South: A Multigenerational Perspective.”

Ro serves as the multiple principal investigator on the study, along with Nancy Fleischer, PhD, associate professor of epidemiology at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, where the award is based.

The study will build on existing literature about the impacts of structural racism on maternal and child health in the U.S. South. By examining the different social determinants of health experienced across generations of women, Ro and Fleischer will fill critical gaps in literature on health disparities among expecting women in vulnerable, underrepresented communities.

Ro is a widely published public health demographer with an extensive background in research on disparities and the social determinants of health. Her participation in this study is one of several current projects aimed at promoting health equity and addressing disparities among marginalized populations.
