Welcome

The conference organizers and program committee members welcome researchers, students and others interested in the internal doses from inhaled aerosols to join us at the University of California, Irvine for the Fourth Aerosol Dosimetry Conference.

We will do our best to provide a stimulating meeting in Southern California, a family-friendly vacation locale with mountains, beaches, amusement parks, world-class dining, shopping, and entertainment.

Key Conference Dates

  • September 13, 2024: Registration closes (except by permission)
  • September 18, 2024: Abstract Submission deadline
  • October 16 -18, 2024: Conference dates (Wed – Fri)
  • December 6, 2024: Papers and other items for Proceedings due
  • January 17, 2025: Papers for peer-review journal publication due

To allow foreign participants to attend both conferences in one trip, the conference dates precede the American Association for Aerosol Research (AAAR) October 21-25, 2024 annual meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Location

The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center of the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering, Irvine, CA, which is adjacent to the UCI campus, is an ideal venue that provides free parking, on-site cuisine, as well as audio visual and other support services. This center is designed to enhance communication in an atmosphere of intellectual excellence. The center is two miles from John Wayne Airport (SNA) and about 40 miles from Los Angeles International (LAX). It also is close to a variety of hotels. Convenient parking is free. The registration fee will include daily breakfast, lunch, refreshment breaks, and transportation between the conference hotel and the Beckman Center is being arranged.

Abstract Submission

Abstracts, 300 words or less should be submitted with all authors listed by September 18, 2024 (submission deadline has been extended). Include your preference for platform or poster sessions and submit to Dr. Phalen (rfphalen@uci.edu) and Cc: Leslie Owens (lpowens@uci.edu). Note: Poster authors will have a brief platform presentation opportunity before the poster viewing. Accepted abstracts must relate to inhaled aerosol doses. Health-effects papers are outside of the scope of the conference.

About the Conference:

Depending on the inhaled doses and the nature of their physicochemical properties, particles, gases, and vapors can have beneficial effects as pharmaceuticals, or adverse effects as environmental or occupational air contaminants. While significant advances have been made in understanding inhaled materials, many aspects of aerosol dosimetry require further development.

To arrive at valid characterization of risks and uncertainties as well as therapeutic benefits, integration of inhaled doses and short- and long- term effects is critical. This conference, the fourth in a series, addresses these and related issues by bringing together diverse experts for interdisciplinary exchange.

The conference topics will be varied, but each is related to advancing the understanding of internal doses received from inhaled substances. Peer-reviewed papers from the first three conferences are in dedicated journal issues: Inhalation Toxicology, 18(10), 2006; Journal of Aerosol Science, 99 (September), 2016; and Journal of Aerosol Science, Virtual Special Issue on Inhaled Aerosol Dosimetry: Models, Applications and Impact, 2021.

Objectives include emphasizing purposeful research targeted to human applications, providing aid for underrepresented and minority participants, and encouraging students by awards and a “meet the employers” luncheon.

Sample Topics to be Addressed Include:

  • Developing Dosimetry Data to Support Health-Related Responses
  • Continuous Flow In Vitro and In Vivo Methods, Models, Advances, Impacts and Limitations
  • Advances in Dosimetry Models Including CFD, MPPD and Physiologic
  • Aerosol Dosimetry in Emerging Micro-physiological Simulation Systems of the Lung
  • Comparative Mammalian Anatomical and Physiological Information, Including Life-Stage Data
  • Deposition, Distribution, and Clearance of Inhaled Soluble and Partially Soluble Aerosols
  • Dose Metrics for Adverse Outcomes Pathways
  • Doses to Target Tissues, Long-Term Retention and Other Axes
  • Delivery and Pharmacokinetics of Inhaled Aerosols and Characterizations of Particles in Tissues
  • Complex Aerosol Systems (Mixtures, charge states, shape factors, concentrations, etc.)
  • Exhaled Aerosols, Viral and Other Bioaerosols
  • Workflows, Data Management Systems, and Reporting Standards
  • Methods, Data Handling, New Materials, and AI and Machine Learning Applications

Publications

Two publications are planned:

  • A Proceedings that will contain abstracts, submitted papers and commentaries. Attendees will be invited to submit a short commentary for inclusion in the proceedings.
  • A dedicated journal issue for publication of selected peer-reviewed papers is also planned.
