Commencement Speaker: Dr. Ann Kurth, President of the New York Academy of Medicine
We are thrilled to announce that Ann Kurth, PhD, CNM, MPH, will be our keynote speaker at this year’s ceremony. Dr. Kurth is the current President of the New York Academy of Medicine and started in this role this past January. A renowned epidemiologist and certified nurse midwife, Dr. Kurth has achieved remarkable results through a multidisciplinary approach to problem-solving and embodies the interdisciplinary spirit we celebrate here at the Susan & Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences.
Prior to her role as the leader of the N.Y. Academy of Medicine, Dr. Kurth was the dean and Linda Koch Lorimer Professor at Yale School of Nursing as well as a professor of epidemiology of microbial diseases at the Yale School of Public Health. During her tenure there, she co-founded the Yale Institute for Global Health, a cross-university research effort. This initiative stems from her personal and professional investment in HIV/Aids, reproductive health, and global health research in the context of pandemics, climate change and other stresses.
Dr. Kurth’s work in global health extends around the world. Her research has been funded by several agencies of the National Institutes of Health, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, UNAIDS, CDC, HRSA, and others, for studies in the U.S. and internationally, with over $20 million as principal investigator. She is past chair of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health, and has served on the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which sets prevention and screening guidelines for the United States.
Working across traditional boundaries, Dr. Kurth brings together experts from diverse fields to tackle complex challenges and create innovative solutions as is evidenced by the nearly 240 peer-reviewed articles, chapters, and scholarly monographs. She has also presented at hundreds of scientific conferences and invited talks.
Through her work, Dr. Kurth has demonstrated the power of collaboration and the importance of breaking down silos to achieve truly transformative results. Her achievements serve as a model for all of us as we navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
Dr. Kurth exemplifies the spirit of excellence and achievement that we strive to instill in all our graduates. We are confident that her insights and words of wisdom will inspire you as you embark on the next phase of your life journey.
