Biography

Edwards holds a doctorate in epidemiology from the University of Washington and a masters in science in nutrition from the California State University, Chico. 

Epidemiologist and biostatistician Karen L. Edwards, MS, PhD is an expert in a wide range of public health topics including nutrition, genetics, chronic disease, cancer and COVID-19. She currently serves as professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California, Irvine Program in Public Health and Associate Director for Population Science & Cancer Control at the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. 

Research Interests

Primary research focus is in genetic epidemiology and the use of multivariate approaches to define phenotypes for complex diseases. Edwards' genetic epidemiology research covers a broad range of conditions, including diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, melanoma and Parkinson's Disease. Her research interest also looks into the interactions between environmental factors (particularly diet) and genetic susceptibility (Gene x environment interactions). Additionally, Edwards works on several interdisciplinary projects that focus on the ethical, legal or social implications of genomics and applications to clinical and public health practice.

Current Projects/Studies

Edwards is also available to comment on disease transmission and COVID-19 risk mitigation. Since the start of the pandemic, she has provided critical public health advice throughout the pandemic that has appeared in national outlets including the New York Times, The Washington Post, Condé Nast Traveler, NBC, and more.
