Department of Health, Society, & Behavior

Welcome

The Department of Health, Society, & Behavior is the newest department to be established within the UC Irvine Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health. The Department is home to dedicated faculty who focus on health disparities and health equity; social determinants of health, health behavior, health communication; and multilevel health behavior change interventions. The research, teaching, and practice interests of our faculty aim to identify and act upon the complex pathways linking environmental, social, cultural, and biological factors with health status and behavior.

“We are an interdisciplinary group of researchers and educators focused on improving health and health care for all. Our work spans health behavior, health equity, community-engaged research, and health policy, which allows us to work across existing silos in our health system in identifying problems and developing solutions.”

Degrees and Programs Offered

We strive to train our students in theoretical perspectives at all levels of socio-ecological models, quantitative and qualitative research methodology, advanced research design and methodology, statistical methods, community-based approaches to research, and the ethical conduct of research. We also instill critical thinking in our students about how to tailor information to reach populations and to empower communities for social change. Our students are equipped to work in a variety of research and practice-based settings, including academic, governmental, community-based organizations at the local, regional and global levels to address the myriad complex public health problems existing in our world today.
