Learn how the immune system interacts with infectious diseases, in particular with viral infections. An introduction to basic virology and immunology, it concentrates on the way in which the immune system is critical to the prevention of infections.

Provides an understanding of the fundamental dependency of human health on global environmental integrity. Examines the distribution of infectious disease and the health and disease risk among human populations. Introduces basic methods for infectious disease epidemiology. Case studies of important diseases, including HIV and malaria, are conducted.

Student participation in a series of research-related activities performed in an individual or small-group setting under the guidance of a faculty advisor.

Please Note:
- Students must have identified and secured an independent study advisor for their capstone project by the (start/end) of their junior year.
- Students will work with their advisor for the duration of their project (1 unit of PubHlth 198 or equivalent independent study course).
- The capstone project can be: Research with the selected advisor, independent report on topic of interest, informational presentation, etc.
- The advisor you select does not need to be from the Program in Public Health.
