Jayveeritz_Bautista
Jayveeritz Bautista, MS
PhD Candidate
Advisor: Michael Kleinman

Bautista is interested in research on air pollution and electronic nicotine delivery devices. For his Master’s thesis, he recovered and identified metal-related compounds deposited in the lungs of agricultural workers to associate particles with observed lung injuries. He also worked as a graduate student researcher for the Tobacco Control Evaluation Center in the Department of Public Health Sciences at UC Davis.

PhD Student (Environmental Toxicology)
Advisor: Sunny Jiang

My research interests focus on coastal ocean microbiomes and water quality along urban communities. My goals are to identify how microbial pathogens carried by human waste flowing to the ocean affect the health of microbiomes, coastal ecosystems, and, ultimately, human communities.

Yerin Jung
Yerin Jung
PhD Candidate (Exposure Sciences and Environmental Epidemiology)
Yerin’s research interests include estimation of pre- and post-natal exposure using pharmacokinetic (PK) modelings, particularly exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE). She received a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Environmental Science at Korea University and her prior research work focused on monitoring indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Celina Phillipson
PhD Student (Exposure Sciences & Environmental Epidemiology)
Advisor: Bartell, Scott
Phillipson studies the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water sources and their associations with adverse health outcomes. For her MS, she conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis clarifying the association between PFAS and inflammatory bowel disease. For her dissertation, she will investigate whether PFAS serum levels are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and how it will differ by gender, race, and socioeconomic status.

I’m deeply invested in investigating the correlation between environmental pollutants and adverse pregnancy outcomes. This entails scrutinizing how pollutants, originating from sources like air quality and dietary choices, impacts the well-being of pregnant women and their unborn children. Furthermore, I’m examining the lasting effects of historical discriminatory practices, notably redlining, on present-day health disparities in marginalized communities. By comprehending these dynamics, I aspire to shed light on the persistent challenges these communities endure. Ultimately, my work aims to bridge the gap between environmental factors, historical contexts, and contemporary health outcomes, contributing to a broader awareness of the far-reaching health effects of societal injustices.

Madeline Karen Marie Vera-Colon
PhD Student
Advisor: Sparks, Nicole

Madeline’s current research goals are to bridge the intersectionality of toxicology work and public health policy as seen in the increased instances of disparities in minority populations. She is working to address pregnant persons exposure to air pollutants and the impacts it carries on embryonic skeletal development. She has a personal enthusiasm for mentorship/career guidance for students in historically excluded groups interested in pursuing a STEM-related career.
