Bruce Albala, PhD, joined UCI Public Health’s Department of Environmental and Occupational Health as an adjunct professor at the start of 2023. Albala has extensive experience in both basic and clinical medical research in the areas of Alzheimer’s disease, dementias, cognitive impairment, and cognitive testing and has served as a clinical Investigator in over two dozen pharmaceutical trials. He also holds appointments in the Department of Neurology at the UCI School of Medicine as well as the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences with the UCI School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Jason Douglas, PhD, MA, joined UCI Public Health at the start of the fall quarter, as the vice chair and associate professor of health, society, and behavior. He has spent the past five years building inroads with historically marginalized communities to address social and environmental determinants impacting their health and well-being.

Two-time Anteater alumna, Wenjun Fan, MD, MS ‘15, PhD ’23, joined UCI Public Health’s Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics at the start of the fall quarter as an assistant professor of teaching. Dr. Fan will be devoting much of her time to teaching but will carve out time for her research in treating cardiovascular disease – a leading cause of death for most racial and ethnic groups in the U.S.

Matthew Landry, PhD, RDN, FAND, joined UCI Public Health’s Department of Population Health & Disease Prevention, as an assistant professor, in the middle of 2023. Landry believes that education and awareness are key to better community health and well-being, which is the result of a combination of factors: good diet, quality sleep, and physical activity. He was a Fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and was also recognized as the Young Dietitian of the Year by the California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Karen Lincoln, PhD, MSW, MA, who joined UCI Public Health at the start of 2023, is a professor of environmental and occupational health and also serves as the director of the UCI Center for Environmental Health Disparities Research. Over the past 15 years, Lincoln has established strong roots in Los Angeles analyzing the social, psychosocial, and public health factors related to health disparities among Black Americans. As a researcher and social worker, she investigates societal and social determinants’ impact and how to inform and design interventions that can restore and promote the health and well-being of Black Americans across the lifespan.
Marizen Ramirez, MPH, PhD, joined UCI Public Health in July 2023, as the inaugural associate dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion and as a professor of environmental and occupational health. Ramirez has spent more than 20 years researching injury violence – a leading cause of death for children, adolescents, and adults younger than 45 years. In her associate dean role, she plans to focus on supporting students throughout their academic years at UC Irvine, including future job placement and more.

Tetyana Vasylyeva, MSc, MPH, DPhil, joined UCI Public Health at the start of the fall 2023 quarter, as an assistant professor of population health and disease prevention. Dr. Vasylyeva is an expert in molecular and socio-behavioral epidemiology, with a particular focus on HIV epidemics in migrant and forcibly displaced populations. Specifically, her research focuses on vulnerable populations (people who inject drugs, forcibly displaced people, men who have sex with men) and are at risk for HIV.

Dabao Zhang, MS, PhD, joined UCI Public Health in the middle of the year, as a professor of epidemiology and biostatistics. Dr. Zhang has spent his career developing exploratory tools to visualize and reveal relational structures among massive variables in big data.

Min Zhang, MD, MS, PhD, joined UCI Public Health at the start of 2023, as a professor of epidemiology and biostatistics. With two doctoral degrees in neuroscience and biological statistics & and computational biology and another medical degree, Zhang has decades of experience. As a biostatistician, Zhang specializes in statistical inference for “omics” data, which studies the whole genome/transcriptome/metabolome instead of specific molecules. She also serves as the biostatistics shared resources director for the UCI Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.
