Professor Wu recognized for her impact on environmental health research at annual health sciences award ceremony

Jun Wu Earth Guardian

A big congratulations to Jun Wu, PhD, professor of environmental and occupational health at UCI Program in Public Health, who received the Athalie R. Clarke Achievement Award at a celebratory luncheon on Tuesday, June 6. The annual award recognizes renowned UCI researchers from our Program in Public Health, and other College of Health Sciences units.

Dr. Wu, or our “Earth Guardian,” has dedicated her career to uncovering the environmental dangers around us and how they disproportionately impact our most vulnerable communities. Recent research includes the effect of wildfires on elderly and disadvantaged communities; air pollution exposure on pregnant women; and the positive effects of green space on postpartum women.

Just this past month, Dr. Wu and her collaborators were awarded a $2.7 million dollar grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to link lead exposure with children’s academic performance and neurobehavioral outcomes in Santa Ana.

As the Co-Deputy Director of the UCI Center for Environmental Health Disparities Research, this award is a testament to Dr. Wu’s contribution to not only our UCI research enterprise but also to preserving our Earth and protecting our lives.
