The UCI Program in Public Health had a landmark year at the 2023 Annual Society of Toxicology (SOT) Meeting, which was held in Nashville, Tennessee at the end of March. The Society is a professional and scholarly organization of scientists from academic institutions, government, and industry representing the great variety of scientists who practice toxicology in the U.S. and abroad.

The Program’s doctoral students were nominated for 16 different awards, of which 6 were awarded. Awardees included:

  • Doctoral student Dipro Bose received three awards, including Toshio Narahashi Neurotoxicology SS Trainee Conference Endowment Award, the Sheldon D. Murphy Student and Postdoctoral Endowment Award, and the Dr. Harihara Mehendale Graduate Student Best Abstract Award.
  • Doctoral student Punnag Saha received the Best Manuscript Award and the Dr. Laxman Desai Graduate Student Best Abstract Award (1st Place).
  • Doctoral student Subhajit Roy received the Dr. Laxman Desai Graduate Student Best Abstract Award (3rd Place).

All awardees are members of the Chatterjee Lab, which focuses on environmental health and disease.

The Program offers a PhD degree in environmental health sciences (EHS) and students can pick from two different tracks: the Environmental Toxicology track and the Exposure Sciences and Environmental Epidemiology track. The curriculum provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary and appropriate to teach and/or conduct basic and applied research programs in inhalation/pulmonary toxicology, biochemical neurotoxicology, reproductive and developmental toxicology, chemical pathology, toxicokinetics, radiation toxicology, molecular carcinogenesis, exposure assessment, risk assessment, environmental epidemiology, environmental justice, and community-based participatory research.
