Environmental health sciences PhD candidate, Alexis Guerra, was selected to receive a 2021 National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship award. The prestigious award, which provides three years of research funding, recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported STEM disciplines who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees at accredited U.S. institutions.
Ms. Guerra’s research project focuses on coastal ocean microbiomes and water quality along urban communities. She is interested in identifying how pathogens carried by human waste affect the health of microbiomes, coastal ecosystems, and, ultimately, human communities.

Ms. Guerra’s’ advisor is Dr. Sunny Jiang, Professor and Chair of Civil and Environmental Engineering, who also holds a WOS appointment in Public Health’s Department of Environmental and Occupational Health.
