Theresa Duong, PhD Candidate, Chosen for Campus-wide Fellowship

Congratulations to UCI Public Health PhD candidate, Theresa (Huong) Duong, who was selected as the UCI recipient for the Fletcher Jones Fellowship for the entire UCI campus! Theresa was selected as the nominee for Public Health after reviewing several very competitive applications.

“This fellowship means a lot to me. It affirms that my work is a valuable contribution to the field and will allow me protected time to focus on my dissertation order to graduate.”

– Theresa Duong, PhD in Public Health Candidate

“The generous stipend will not only support my research efforts, but also provide financial support for my baby boy’s childcare and health-related expenses,” Theresa added.

Under the support, guidance, and mentorship of assistant professor, Suellen Hopfer, PhD, Theresa’s dissertation topic is on “HPV vaccine communication with friend and family peers among Vietnamese American young adults.” She hopes that this study will increase vaccination uptake, and ultimately decrease cancer disparities among Vietnamese Americans.

The Fletcher Jones fellowship is a highly prestigious award that provides a doctoral student with a dissertation completion fellowship to be used as a stipend. Each campus may make one award, and the recipient is chosen by a committee constituted by the Graduate Dean. In addition to thanking her faculty advisor, she would like to thank PhD program directors, David Timberlake, PhD, and Annie Ro, PhD, for helping her put together a strong application.
