Double Major

In order to add a double major, students must meet the following criteria

MAJOR PREREQUISITES
Public Health Policy (B.A.)
  1. Minimum cumulative 2.0 UC GPA .
  2. A 2.0 GPA in the Qtr immediately preceding COM.
  3. Completion of PH-1, PH-2, Stats 7/ or Stats 8 with an combined 2.5 GPA.
  4. Minimum 2.5 GPA for all UCI courses previously completed required for PHP degree.
  5. Minimum 3.0 GPA for all courses transferred from other institutions required for PHP.
Public Health Science (B.S.)
  1. Minimum cumulative 2.0 UC GPA.
  2. A 2.0 GPA in the Qtr immediately preceding COM.
  3. Completion of PH-1, PH-2, Chem 1A, Chem 1B, Bio 93 & Bio 94 with a combined 2.5 GPA.
  4. Minimum 2.5 GPA for all UCI courses previously completed required for PHS degree.
  5. Minimum 3.0 GPA for all courses transferred from other institutions required for PHS.

Public Health Science and Public Health Policy

Only seven courses can double count for both majors:
  1. Public Health 1
  2. Public Health 2
  3. Public Health 101
  4. Math 2A
  5. Math 2B
  6. Statistics
  7. Public Health 195W

BioSci 93 and 94 will only satisfy the PHS major, and will not satisfy the BioSci component in PHP.

Students must complete dissimilar Social & Behavioral Courses for each major, totaling six courses. If a student completes these courses at a Community College it could be a total of four courses.

Public Health with any major in the School of Social Ecology

  1. Public Health 195W must be taken through Public Health. This course includes a 100 hour a week internship, plus the Public Health writing section. You will also be required to take SE 194 writing section.
  2. Only two (up to eight units) can overlap. If you use Public Health 195W to count towards your Social Ecology degree, it will count towards four of the eight allowed units.
  3. Please note the internship site selected must be in both the Social Ecology Field Study Catalog, as well as the Public Health Practicum Catalog.

Biological Science and Public Health Policy

Five courses can apply for both majors:
  1. Math 2A
  2. Math 2B
  3. Statistics
  4. Two Upper Division Courses

General Notes

  • Students who major in Public Health Science MAY NOT double major in:
    1. Biological Sciences
    2. Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • You may apply for a double major on-line, however, you must sign a double major contract which includes your course plan. Please make an appointment with a counselor to sign the required contract.

Important Information Regarding Psychology Courses:

  • Credit is not awarded for PsyBeh P9/ Psych 7A if taken concurrently with or after PsyBeh P11A, 11B, or 11C or Psych 9A, or 9C
  • Students will receive a waiver of PsyBeh P9/ Psych 7A that have completed all three courses of PsyBeh P11A-B-C/ Psych 9A-B-C 11-29-11
