Film: Autism And Arts At The Auticenter - produced by Liza Krassner - Public Health News Spotlight

On August 29, 2014, the families of the Auticenter, an association of parents with children in the autism spectrum in Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic, hosted an event called Autism and Arts aimed to create a local grassroots effort to educate and raise autism awareness in their city. Milena Urbanova, Director of the Auticenter, invited producer Liza Krassner from Southern California, a parent of a child with autism, to screen the award winning documentary Through the Heart of Tango as part of the event. Together they partnered with the University of South Bohemia and Tango Argentino of Ceske Budejovice, to create an all-inclusive family friendly event that was open to everyone.

UCI Public Health Ph.D. student Kathleen Carlos selected 2016 Summer Research Program Fellow of the UC Irvine Complex Biological Systems (CBS) in partnership with the Human Biology Program, University of Tsukuba, Japan (http://hbp.tsukuba.ac.jp/en/). Through a competitive process, CBS selects and supports UCI students involved in biomedical, environmental, and public health research projects to join an international group of experts and trainees in Japan. With this fellowship, Kathleen will continue her dissertation research project on environmental exposure to lithium as a risk factor for mental health conditions in vulnerable populations.

UCI Public Health Ph.D. student Melissa Matlock selected 2016 fellow of the campus-wide Data Science Initiative (DSI). Through a competitive application process, DSI selects and supports UCI PhD students involved in new interdisciplinary research projects that have a strong data science/data analysis component. With this fellowship, Melissa will continue her dissertation research project on risk factors that influence the distribution of Valley Fever in vulnerable populations.
